The Abayudaya

The Abayudaya (Abayudaya is Luganda for "People of Judah") are a Jewish community in eastern Uganda, near the town of Mbale. The Abayudaya's population is estimated to number between 2,000 and 3,000; they are subsistence farmers who keep kosher and are devout in their practice. Learn More.

In 2023, Repair the Sea connected with Moishe S., the Rosh Kehila of the Namanyonyi Jewish Community, to launch the Reverse Tashlich in Uganda. Their first cleanup brought 90 members of the community together to clean a local river. Our donors, the Maurice A. and Thelma P. Rothman Foundation, were so moved by the story that they sponsored the purchase of land and the building of a synagogue. Now you can make a positive impact on this community and others in Eastern Uganda, by sponsoring an upcycled water catchment tank.

Meet Moses Sebagabo

As Chairperson of the Namanyonyi Jewish Community in Mbale, Uganda, Moses is spearheading the Gift of Water initiative.

"I assists the members to deal with the challenges of a subsistence agriculture economy with no medical or home insurance."

He is often called on to take people to the hospital, or lead during emergencies such as floods, droughts, storms, and insect infestations. Moses works hard to secure donations for medical care and education for his community, since local schools are open only to students who pay tuition.  Additionally, Moses advocates for peace with the broader community including Muslims and Christians.

Born and raised by Jewish parents in Namanyonyi village in Mbale in Eastern Uganda, Moses is a lawyer by profession. He and his wife Esther have six children.
